In this keynote, Sydney will explore the importance of queer and intersectional feminist work. Drawing from nir extensive experience researching and teaching within the field of gender and women’s studies, Sydney will discuss what it means to be an intersectional feminist, how to “queer” feminist movements, and strategies for feminist social justice activism.

Queering Music: The Role of Music in Advancing Social Justice

In this keynote, Sydney will explore how music has been a critical part of advancing social justice movements. Drawing from nir experience as a professional musician, Sydney will discuss how music provides an avenue to counter dominant systems, a critical place for self-expression of equity-deserving communities, and how protest songs build awareness of social justice issues.

Queering Politics: Engaging in Political Advocacy Year-Round

In this keynote, Sydney will explore how engaging in political advocacy is an essential part of activism. Drawing from nir experience as a former City Council candidate, Sydney will discuss what it means to engage in political advocacy, how to be an informed voter, and strategies for staying aware of and advocating for political issues year-round, not just during election season.

Queering Representation: Representation as Mirrors, Windows, and Doors

In this keynote, Sydney will explore the importance of queer representation within books and media. Drawing from nir MA research, Sydney will discuss representation in relation to concepts of mirrors, windows, and doors, and examine how queer representation counters dominant myths, empowers queer and trans individuals, and advances social justice.
